![]() Where is carbon capture, utilization and storage happening? For cross-cutting considerations, see our What Is Carbon Removal? fact sheet. So, where does that carbon dioxide go? Most likely, carbon dioxide will be stored underground in locations such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs, deep saline formations and un-minable coal beds.Finance: mechanisms such as cost-sharing can promote global benefits by helping to manage local costs of BECCS projects.Agricultural policy: creative agricultural policies and processes can support sustainable biomass production and sourcing on large scales.Life cycle analysis: processes and standards need to be developed for ensuring that BECCS operations sequester more carbon than their supply chains emit.Research, development and demonstration (RD&D): support and guidance for RD&D is needed to promote sustainable bio-feedstocks and supply chains and reliable methods of carbon storage or utilization.Efforts to combine the two technologies remain limited: besides various pilot projects and small-scale BECCS projects at various kinds of facilities (e.g., waste-to-energy, ethanol, cement, electrical generation, etc.), the American agribusiness firm Archer Daniels Midland operates a commercial facility in Decatur, Illinois the British electrical power generation company Drax has converted a large coal-fired power plant in North Yorkshire to run on wood pellets, with plans to add carbon capture and storage and Toshiba is adding carbon capture and storage to its Mikawa biomass-fired power plant in Japan. The other component technology for BECCS, carbon capture and sequestration, is relatively well understood, but, for economic reasons, it has mostly struggled to move beyond demonstration projects for saline sequestration and limited commercial projects that use CO 2 in enhanced oil recovery. Technological Readinessīioenergy and biofuels are already widely used. National Academy of Sciences estimates a global potential to sequester 3.4–5.2 GtCO 2 per year via BECCS without large adverse impacts.Ĭost estimates vary widely, with one recent expert assessment projecting costs of US$100–200 per ton of CO 2 sequestered and another projecting costs of US$20–100 per ton. Such projections have been met with intense skepticism, partly because of land-use requirements. Scenarios compiled by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggest that limiting warming to 1.5☌ or 2☌ at the end of the century could involve sequestering roughly 5–10 billion metric tons of CO 2 (GtCO 2) per year via BECCS by 2100. A recent expert assessment estimates potential sequestration rates of 0.5–5 billion metric tons of CO 2 per year in 2050 with the possibility of much higher rates by 2100. Potential Scale and CostsĮstimates for the potential scale of BECCS vary widely. Smaller scale applications using agricultural residues or marginal agricultural land generally pose fewer risks. Many of these issues would arise only from very large-scale adoption of BECCS. Concerns about geologic storage: transporting and injecting CO 2 into geological reservoirs raises concerns about pipelines, CO 2 leakage, seismic activity, and water pollution.Air pollution: combustion of biomass and biofuels creates local air pollution.Soil carbon loss: land conversion for growing biomass could release carbon stored in soils or existing biomass.Increased fertilizer use: fertilizer for growing biomass could further stress nitrogen-saturated ecosystems.Water resources: growing dedicated bioenergy crops would increase demand for water.Biodiversity loss: land conversion for growing biomass could alter habitats and threaten biodiversity. ![]() Displacement: moving communities for land conversion threatens livelihoods, human rights, and social identity.Food security: devoting large areas of land to bioenergy crops could raise food prices.Energy: BECCS produces energy, potentially including carbon-negative fuels for hard-to-decarbonize sectors. However, care must be taken to ensure that emissions from the growing, harvesting, transporting, and processing of the biomass do not outweigh the captured carbon, and that the storage of captured carbon is reliable over long timescales. That is, BECCS could serve to draw down the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO 2) in the atmosphere. Because the biomass draws carbon from the atmosphere as it grows, BECCS can be a negative emissions technology when it is implemented well. Biomass (organic material) is converted into heat, electricity, or liquid or gas fuels (the “bioenergy” step), and the carbon emissions from this bioenergy conversion are captured and stored in geological formations or embedded in long-lasting products (the “carbon capture and storage” step). Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is a carbon removal technique that depends on two technologies.

It wouldn’t have turned it into Shakespeare, but diverting some of the resources from bloom and anti-aliasing toward translation and editing would’ve at the very least made this a less miserable experience.Īs it is, the best I can say about this game is that it is – mercifully – short. In fact, The Works of Mercy could have told its story just as well – probably better, in fact – using simpler means, like RPG Maker or even Twine. I have separated each scene’s responses to make the dialogue choices easier to follow, and to. Still, there’s really no reason for that. Select New Game and then select the choices as outlined below. And there are enough 3D options available to slow your computer to a crawl, if cranking up all the graphics settings to maximum is your thing. ![]() In the game’s defense, it does have some nice visual moments the paintings in the protagonist’s bedroom, for example, are deliciously creepy. Of the various visitors who arrive to the apartment, you’d think one of them might notice the gruesome corpse of the half-naked escort sprawled in the bathroom, especially if you don’t bother closing the bathroom door. The translated dialogue is awkward at best, the voice acting is full of weird pauses and unnatural points of emphasis – as though they were read from the page without context – and despite the fact that the entire game takes place in a single apartment, the environment feels half-complete.Īlso, a little more attention could have been made to giving consequences to previous actions. This isn’t to say that the story is lacking but the execution is good. The best definition is that an action-adventure game will allow players to take on. Its slow plot reveal – right down to the predictable “twist” ending – is somehow both muddled and predictable, and its various themes of religious and sexual hypocrisy and parental abuse aren’t really addressed, just clumsily hinted at via bad dialogue and a dreamlike flashback scene. After the unexpected death of a close friend, Kristina returns to her hometown looking for answers, only to unearth a string of dark secrets. The Works of Mercy isn’t particularly thought-provoking, either. In the denial ending, the point is that Kristina is blocking out the truth, and pretending to herself she actually saved Charlotte when she didnt. Not helping matters, the evil mastermind on the telephone sounds less like Tobin Bell or the admittedly creepy – for lots of reasons – Kevin Spacey and more like Norm McDonald. The game’s methods of murder – an explosive toothbrush (yes, you read that correctly), a poison apple, an unexpectedly live electrical circuit – fail to really shock or frighten. The puppet of the former film is replaced by a disembodied voice on the telephone, while the corporal and spiritual works of Christian mercy replace the seven deadly sins of the latter. It was opened on Jby Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. ![]() However, due to heavy rainfall the opening was postponed. The newly renovated venue was expected to open June 27, 2013. The original video screens were replaced by two 14' × 27' LED screens and two 11' × 17' LED screens in the lawn area. Delay systems for sound were added to the stage and lawn area. The main entrance was widened to accommodate the capacity expansion. The expansion also includes shuttle buses from the neighboring Soldier Field to help concert attendees with parking. There's a 12-foot slope from the front of stage to the rear of lawn, providing the proper elevation change so that the lawn can be used as a park area when not in use by the pavilion. Additionally, two 300-seat grandstands were added, while the lawn arena can accommodate 22,000. This would mean rotating the stage to feature a lawn seating area, increasing the overall space of the venue from 4.78 to 6.9 acres. In March 2013, the Chicago Plan Commission approved a $3 million plan to grow the venue's capacity from 8,000 to 30,000 seats. The city voted against the expansion in 2011. The Chicago Park District originally sought expansion in 2010, wanting to increase capacity to 14,000 and attract mainstream acts to the venue. In 2019, the venue adopted Live Nation's Sustainability Program. No other bags of any type will be allowed. To reduce staff contact with guest belongings, they allow clear plastic, vinyl or PVC tote bags no larger than 12” x 6” x 12” and/or small clutch bags (4.5”x 6.5”). Īfter the COVID-19 pandemic, the venue implemented a new bag policy at their events. The venue opened June 24, 2005, with a concert by American band Earth, Wind & Fire. ![]() The Chicago Park District receives roughly $250,000 from the venue (through sponsorship deals) and $1 from every ticket sold during concert season. It features three grandstands (totaling 3,666 seats) and a general admission area (totaling 4,500 seats). The amphitheater features a 56' × 40' stage with 15' × 20' video screens on either side of the stage. The venue was designed by Mark Dewalt of Valerio Dewalt Train Associates costing $1.7 million to construct. Since the venue would be located on the nature reserve, the structure would be erected in June and disassembled in September of each year. With the new advent of the nature reserve to replace Meigs Field, the Chicago Park District proposed an outdoor music venue, similar to the Ravinia Pavilion. Over four acres were set aside for the forthcoming music venue. Within the allocated 91 acres, Northerly Island was born. Daley refuted the plan and proposed the space become a lakefront park and nature reserve. Originally, the space was planned to become an aviation museum. In August 2003, construction crews were sent in to continue demolition of the airfield. The Federal Aviation Administration fined the city $33,000, with an additional one million paid in grants. No one within state or city government were consulted on the demolition besides Daley. The airfield was set to continue operation until 2011, when it would be turned over to the City of Chicago. Daley stated the continued operation of the airfield was a threat to Chicago's cityscape, using the events of 9/11 as a reference. The construction crew excavated six large X's on the runway. Daley ordered a midnight demolition of the airfield. The venue lies on the former site of Meigs Field. Known as the "Venue with a View", the amphitheater has views of Lake Michigan, Burnham Harbor, Soldier Field, and the Chicago skyline. For us our only option with Roboform was to use it to securely email encrypted password data around, but we found this messy - especially when passwords change, as they have to by our security policies. OK yes, that's a bit naughty, but for me (the way that my brain works anyway) I found this technique a superb way of creating eternally memorable and super secure passwords. In a twisted way I would justify it as being good for me and 'good' for the customer. Melqart’s dog, one day, while walking along the beach with its divine owner, had stopped to chew on a murex sea snail that had washed up on the shore, hence staining its mouth with the purple hue. The story of the discovery of Tyrian purple was first related by Julius Pollux, a Greek grammarian and Sophist from the 2nd century CE. The message, however, is the same, via The Eclectic Light CompanyĪccording to legend, the city of Tyre, from where Tyrian purple came, was founded by the Phoenician deity Melqart, also known as Heracles of Tyre (later becoming adopted into the Greek and Roman pantheon as the famous Heracles/Hercules of Greek myth). As such, production facilities were historically right next to where the creature was harvested. Timing is also a huge issue, as the dye begins to degrade as soon as the snail is out of the water. There are biochemical, enzymatic, and photochemical reactions that take place within the process as well as reduction and oxidation processes. It is a difficult process that requires much knowledge of the biological systems at work. Hexaplex trunculus, the banded dye-murex, via inaturalist.nzĪnother factor in the variation of Tyrian purple color is the minor differences in the process of extracting the dye. A blue dye color known as tekhelet also traditionally comes from this species, and was an important color for dyeing tzitzit (fringes/tassels) on tallits (prayer shawls) used in Jewish religious practice. The banded dye-murex is found today in the western Mediterranean and was used by Phoenician colonies there to create an indigo-colored dye. Various other similar sea snails are also used, but dye production from them is less common and a more recent development as opposed to the traditional murex dye production which dates back to roughly 4,000 years ago.Įach species generates a mucus from which the dye is extracted, and each species yields a variation in color.
